Welcome to the Weekend Roundup! – News & View – 9/8/18

As a former Catholic and now born again follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, my heart breaks for my Catholic family and friends. Maybe their eyes will be opened to the idea that if the Catholic Church can be so very wrong in how it has covered up these sex abuse scandals, is it possible that the enemy came in long ago and has brought in false “traditions”, doctrines and dogmas as well? The Bible warns us that the enemy disguises himself as an angel of light. I urge my Catholic family and friends to pray for the truth of the gospel to be revealed to you…I have been praying that for you.  Put your faith and trust in Christ alone to save you.
This is what the Apostle Paul says:
2 Corinthians 11:12-14 And what I am doing I will continue to do, (X)in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. 13 For such men are (Y)false apostles, (Z)deceitful workmen, (AA)disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as (AB)an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as (AC)servants of righteousness. (AD)Their end will correspond to their deeds.

This past week, the pedophile priest abuse and cover-up scandal has continued to dominate all news headlines connected to the Catholic church.

Before we look at the rest of the news stories related to the scandal, I wanted to bring attention to the above story involving evangelical pastor, John Piper (photo left). To his credit, Piper hits the nail right on the proverbial head. News of this ongoing pedophile priest scandal and pope Francis’ (photo right) possible direct involvement are tragic, yet secondary compared to the scandal of the hundreds of millions of souls who have been misled by Roman Catholicism’s spiritually deadly false gospel of salvation by sacramental grace and merit.       Hi Tom, I typed that “Amen” yesterday but forgot to send it. I just woke up and was looking for a YouTube video to listen to when I stumbled across this article and HAD to share it with you. I just heard of this site the other day while watching a video conference with Justin Peters (ever heard of him?).       1. Thanks, Jackie. I’m not a fan of Piper because of his stand on some of the secondaries and his associations with some pastors who are definitely bad apples.
        On this issue of justification and sanctification, we all have to tread very carefully. Salvation is by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone as declared in Ephesians 2:8-9. However, we’re also aware that genuine believers will manifest the fruit of their justification in Christ as spoken of in Ephesians 2:10. So our works and charity don’t merit our salvation, but are proof of our salvation. If a person has no fruit (e.g. doesn’t want to go to church, or read the Bible, or pray, or witness, doesn’t even want to talk about God, etc., etc.) we would all probably conclude they never genuinely accepted Christ. I read Piper’s article below. I believe he’s trying to say the same thing as what I wrote above, although I don’t like some of his terminology. John MacArthur was also accused of a similar thing, “Lordship salvation heresy.” Not so. MacArthur was basically also saying what I wrote above. JMac over the years was seeing many people supposedly accepting Christ but then living their lives like they always had, with no fruit of the Spirit. People react strongly to anything they interpret as adding to by grace through faith. That’s good that people are cautious, but the most orthodox pastors will readily acknowledge with James that “faith” without works is bogus. In a similar kind of thing, one gentleman challenged me several times because I tell people to repent of sin and accept Christ by faith alone. He said I was adding a work to faith by telling people to repent. Biblical repentance is turning from sin to Christ but I was not able to convince him therefore I’m still a heretic in his eyes.

      2. Absolutely agree about producing fruit…when He saved me I knew things had to change in my life and they continue to do so. He produced JOY in me through my desire to be closer to Him! I had no other reason to be joyful but just knowing He saved me still gives me great joy in the midst of my circumstances. I am renewing my mind and being transformed by my hearing the gospel and reading my Bible. My desire to grow in my knowledge of Him was immediate and I began on a quest to hear the Bible preached and learn about this God who would die for me. The problem as I see it now is that I went straight from Catholicism into a mixture of “Seeker Sensitive”, Word of Faith, ECT, NAR, Charismatic/Evangelicalism…you name it, I was listening to them all. Now I believe the Lord is giving me discernment and because I have been praying for Him to remove the false teachers and repented of following my itching ears. I believe He is guiding me to godly men who preach the Word of God…but with my eyes more open this time to continue to search the Scriptures on my own. I’m looking at JMac and Justin Peters as being 2 of them so far. Another one I have liked is Jack Hibbs…but I will admit, I am very leary of any preacher right now because of my experience. Here’s the link to the panel discussion I mentioned if you’re interested.

      3. We certainly can benefit from solid Gospel-focused preachers, but as you said, there’s always the danger in the temptation of putting men on pedestals. J Mac and Paul Washer I respect a lot even though I don’t personally agree with everything they teach. I’m a cessationist when it comes to the apostolic gifts so I tend to avoid continuationist teachers. I avoid Rome-friendly teachers like the plague. I’m in the middle of the Calvin-Arminian debate but probably lean more towards the Reformed side. I don’t believe a genuine believer can lose their salvation as the strict Arminians teach. And I appreciate how the conservative Reformed are (mostly) holding the line against fraternizing with Rome. Anyway, I look forward to listening to your video at work tomorrow. Thanks!
