Are you under the mistaken impression that you are a good person?

It’s a lie. Have you believed this lie? “Deep down, I’m really a good person; people in general are basically good. ”

I’ve never done very well on those psycho-babble tests. I mean psychology tests. You know, the ones you have to take during a job interview, or before they even offer you an interview. The ones where they ask that question about what you believe about people in general. Do you believe people basically good? NO! I don’t.

I thought I was supposed to be honest. I don’t believe people are generally good. I believe people are generally self-preserving, self-promoting and selfish. Self, self, self. They think of themselves first and foremost but they have it so twisted, that they want you to believe you’re the one who is wrong when you call them on it.

Society is messed up. Satan has his hands in everything. He’s a big proponent of that teaching. If he can get you to believe that “people” are generally good than you’ll think you are too. And if you think that you are basically good, you probably think you’re even better than most because you’ve seen how they act! Surely you’re better than most. Well, if that’s the way you think, then he’s got you. There’s no need for repentance. You are your own judge. You set your own standard. You, my friend are good…very good. Right?

Think again!

It’s all lies…and he’s the father of lies. He’s been a liar since the beginning.

We are not good…

Our human nature is self-preserving, deceitful and wicked.

Without the saving grace and the atoning blood of Jesus Christ we have no good thing in us.

But God…we were born sinners and our hearts are deceitful and wicked and yet He loved us enough to send His one and only begotten Son to die for our sins. He took the punishment we deserve…and clothed us in His righteousness. Therefore we can now come boldly before the throne of grace. He is merciful and faithful. He formed us in our mother’s womb and called us to be holy.

May you seek Him and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33) and be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:15).
